ANIMAL SUICIDE

ANIMAL SUICIDE

2024-

The project, Animal Suicide, began with a reflection on my past.

When you look up the definition of 'death' in the dictionary, it simply means 'the end of life of an organism or cell.' However, I believe that death extends beyond just physical action. I believe that life is deeply rooted in the act of ‘thinking’, one of the most important aspects of life.

How can you truly say you're living if you're unable to think for yourself—or worse, choose not to?

I once thought I was living in a utopia thanks to the media, but in reality, I was trapped in a cage wrapped in media.

Throughout history, advanced technology has played a significant role in shaping society, plus, with the rise of social media, we now find ourselves constantly connected. We consume endlessly and don’t stop and reflect. Information, memes, opinions—so many flood through

the media that it changes too quickly to process and see what they even are. It doesn’t give us a moment to think for ourselves.

This cycle is something I—and many of us experience every day, hour, and second.

In this fast-paced life, we need to ask ourselves if we are consuming the media with recognition or if we are being consumed by the media itself. Through this series, Animal Suicide, I wanted to ask the audience if they have recognition of their media usage.

It is not just about media consumption but the erosion of thought and the danger of losing our ability to think independently.

KIM KI-HWAN

2023-2024

My grandfather lives in the countryside of Korea, surrounded by mountains. I remember the days when I was young and didn't want to visit him. It was not because of my grandfather but because there was nothing that I could play with as a child.

As time passed, however, my perspective changed. Through the lens of my camera, I see how beautiful the rural region is. Compared to the city, where most colors are artificially vivid, the harmony of nature and the worn color is gorgeous.

Everything I see has become interesting enough to play with.

I miss the scenery, the smells, and especially the time with my grandfather.

After he was diagnosed with dementia, I couldn't see him like he used to.

If I had another chance, I would spend more time with him in his amazing house.
